PRACTICAL LOCAL ADVICE

Know what to do before an engineer arrives

Simple first checks for common heating, plumbing and electrical problems—plus clear guidance on when to stop and call a qualified professional.

Start with the right first step

Only carry out checks that are safe and accessible. Never remove boiler covers, open electrical equipment or work on gas appliances yourself.

No heating or hot water

Check the thermostat setting, boiler pressure and any displayed fault code. Avoid repeatedly resetting a boiler that will not restart. Note the code and contact us for diagnosis.

A leak or burst pipe

Turn off the nearest isolation valve or main stop tap if it is safe to reach, contain the water and move possessions away. Keep water away from electrical fittings.

Plumbing help →

Power or circuit fault

Unplug a suspected faulty appliance. If a breaker trips again, or you notice heat, burning smells or damage, leave it off and arrange proper fault finding.

Electrical help →
Gas emergency: If you smell gas, do not operate electrical switches or use naked flames. Open doors and windows if safe, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Call 999 where there is immediate danger.
